A new children’s’ book written by award-winning author and Swinburne alumnus, Dr Mark Carthew, has been released.

The Great Zoo Hullabaloo! has been brought to life with illustrations from Anil Tortop, evoking the spirit of adventure in enchanting rhyme.

“This book was originally written as the sequel to The Moose is Loose! and once again it features a menagerie of animals,” Dr Carthew says.

“Everyone loves animals and especially familiar zoo creatures. Placing the storyline in the zoo environment provides an endearing and recognisable background for children and adults alike.”

Dr Carthew completed his PhD in writing at Swinburne and is now an Adjunct Research Fellow in Swinburne’s Department of Media and Communication.

Drawing inspiration

Dr Carthew was drawn to children’s books as he sees them as a powerful medium for storytelling.

“An engaging story is made even more effective by visual imagery. I just love working with illustrators, designers, publishers and children’s literature advocates and it is one of the great pleasures and privileges of creating children’s books.”

Meerkats with a book.

His advice for those wishing to become a successful children’s book author is to know the industry.

“Quality writing is only the first step of a sometimes long and complex journey. Getting to know those publishers genuinely interested in certain genres, concepts or commercially attractive ideas is arguably one of the most significant challenges in achieving mainstream publication.”
