  • Professor Neville Owen to play strategic role with Iverson Health Innovations Research Institute and Smart Cities Research Institute

Renowned health sciences Professor Neville Owen has been appointed Distinguished Professor at Swinburne University of Technology.

Professor Owen is a National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Principal Research Fellow and head of the Behavioural Epidemiology Laboratory at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute.

He is also a Thomson Reuters Highly-Cited Researcher, listed in the World’s Most Influential Minds in Social Sciences.

“Professor Owen will play an important research and mentoring role associated with Swinburne’s Iverson Health Innovations Research Institute and our new Smart Cities Research Institute,” says Swinburne Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Aleksandar Subic.

“His work on improving health through transport, urban planning and workplace innovation is well aligned with our strategy.”

Professor Owen’s research relates to the prevention of diabetes, heart disease and cancer, through identifying the health consequences and environmental determinants of physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour - too little exercise and too much sitting.

His research scope covers behavioural measurement, epidemiological and experimental analyses of health consequences, and identifying opportunities for prevention through environmental and policy initiatives.

Professor Owen’s work has attracted international acclaim, resulting in numerous awards, appointments and keynote presentations.

His new role will allow him to maintain his involvement with the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute.

He will also work to strengthen Swinburne’s research engagement with this reputable research organisation.

Professor Owen will join Swinburne in June 2016.
