In Summary

  • Research that identified the source of ‘mystery’ radio bursts at the Parkes radio telescope has ranked number 68 in the Altmetric 2015 Top 100.

Swinburne University of Technology research that identified the source of ‘mystery’ radio bursts at the Parkes radio telescope features in the Altmetric 2015 Top 100, ranking at number 68.

The research revealed that the opening of an on-site microwave oven door mid-cooking was creating peryton signals at the telescope.

It also revealed that the microwave ovens could not have caused the fast radio burst detected earlier in the year.

Much of the media coverage about this work centred around ‘alien signals’ proving to be something more mundane.

Swinburne PhD candidate Emily Petroff explains how we found the source of the mystery signals at The Dish.

Altmetric’s Top 100 lists the most shared and discussed academic research published in the last year.

Their sources include coverage in mainstream media, shares and discussions on social networks and blogs, references in Wikipedia and public policy documents, and comments on post-publication peer-review forums.
