Peter Mares wins Migrant and Settlement Award

Swinburne University of Technology Adjunct Research Fellow Peter Mares has been recognised for his contribution to Australia’s migration story, being awarded the Journalism Excellence Award at the 2015 Australian Migration and Settlement Awards.
Peter won the award for an article he wrote, Living at the wrong end of the queue, for Swinburne Institute for Social Research online publication Inside Story.
Peter said that it would not have been possible for him to publish the article and win the award, if it was not for Inside Story and its outstanding editor, Peter Browne.
“There are few other media outlets that enable writers to explore issues of public policy and politics in depth by publishing longer-form essays and articles,” Peter says.
“My article was about the experience of being indefinitely temporary in Australia as a migrant on a temporary visa, and how this prevents people from getting on with building their lives in Australia and becoming full members of society. I am pleased that I was able to communicate the importance of the issue and the injustice involved.”
This is the third year that the Australian Migration and Settlement Awards have been held. They celebrate the work and support of individuals and organisations that build belonging and welcome for new migrants.
