Swinburne awarded WGEA’s prestigious employer of choice for gender equality citation

In Summary
The Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) has today announced Swinburne University of Technology as an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality.
Swinburne has long been a champion of equality in the workplace, and for the past six consecutive years has been named an Employer of Choice for Women by the Workforce Gender Equality Agency.
“Swinburne is shining a light on gender bias in the workplace. Our Gender Equality Strategic Action Plan demonstrates the university’s commitment to empower our people through training and education,” Swinburne President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Linda Kristjanson said.
“Our goal is to be Australia’s leading university for inclusion and Swinburne’s focus on gender equality is just one aspect of this. Other important initiatives include our Pride at Swinburne celebrations, our Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan and our AccessAbility Action Plan.
“We place great importance on providing our people with a respectful, equal and inclusive work place.”
Developed in accordance with the Workplace Gender Equality Act of 2012, Swinburne’s Gender Equality Strategic Action Plan aims to promote and improve gender equality by implementing a range of objectives and actions. This year four key initiatives have been delivered as a part of the Gender Equality Strategic Action Plan:
- Flexibility @ Swinburne - a program promoting flexible working arrangements for all Swinburne staff
- Swinburne Connection - a comprehensive transition program for Swinburne staff who are about to go on and returning to work from parental leave
- Partners in Prevention - Family and Domestic violence support program
- Gender pay equality - first Australian university to make this commitment
WGEA’s Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation recognises organisations that have demonstrated an active commitment to gender equality, with a focus on removing structural and cultural barriers that prevent the full participation of women and men in the workplace.
“Holders of the 2014 WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation should be celebrated and championed as leading practice role models and innovative thinkers on issues of workplace gender equality,” Helen Conway, Director of Workforce Gender Equality Agency said.
Swinburne is one of 76 organisations receiving the prestigious new citation, launched in November 2013.
