In Summary

Swinburne University of Technology is this month launching its Gender Equality Strategic Action Plan.

This plan was developed in line with the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012, a law designed to promote and improve gender equality.

In 2014 Swinburne’s Gender Equality Strategic Action Plan will deliver  three key initiatives:

  • Flexibility @ Swinburne-a program promoting flexible working arrangements;
  • Swinburne Connection-a transition program for parents returning to work from parent leave;
  • ‘You the Man’-a theatre-based program which tackles issues of bystander engagement and violence prevention.

Swinburne’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Linda Kristjanson said: “At Swinburne we celebrate and respect strength that difference creates.

“Swinburne is committed to achieving gender equality as an essential prerequisite for a fair workplace.”

Swinburne has long been a champion of equality in the workplace, and for the past six consecutive years has been named an Employer of Choice for Women by the Workforce Gender Equality Agency.

Swinburne’s Director of Human Resources, Dr Andrew J Smith said:  “The reason behind developing Swinburne’s Gender Equality Strategic Action Plan is very simple – it will lead to a better workplace and a better society.

“While we have worked diligently over many years to improve gender diversity at Swinburne, our Action Plan will help us realise our goal of true gender equality, where our people, regardless of gender, enjoy the same rewards, resources and opportunities within Swinburne.”
