PrimeSCI! Summer School Holiday Science Workshops | Hawthorn

Become a palaeontologist and examine our special fossil collection, including specimens from Australia and all over the world. Make your own fossil cast to take home and discover what we can learn about prehistoric animals from the fossils that have been left behind.  (1.5hrs)                  

Year 1 - 6

Learn to name bones in the body, explore what makes bones strong, identify and investigate real skeletons of animals. Mr Bones will be delighted to welcome you into his science lab! (1hr)                        

Foundation - Year 3

Let’s talk the chemistry of carbon dioxide, an ever-present supervillan of climate change. From global warming to ocean acidification, we’ll explore and experiment with the chemical and physical properties of this greenhouse gas and its impact on the climate. (1hr)

Year 3 - 8

Examine the important parts of plants, both inside and out. There are no magic beans here, just a hands-on introduction to botany for our young scientists.  (1hr)            

Foundation - Year 3

Travel through our respiratory system, exploring inhalation, exhalation and investigating your own lung capacity. Understand the breathing process and how it is affected by asthma. Get close to real animal lungs as you feel this unique organ and watch it inflate! Includes real sheep lungs. (1hr)    

Year 3 - 6

Investigate the invisible pushes and pulls caused by magnetism. Use mystery objects, trains, compasses and lots of magnets, as you find out more about the strength and direction of this force. (1 hr)            

Foundation - Year 3

Step back in time and join Mr Sinclair in the high school science lab of the 1980s. Learn from demonstrations with unique equipment, combined with Ralph’s clear explanations to discover the physics of pressure. Parents are welcome to stay and learn too!  (1.5hr)

Year 5 - 8

Learn about states of matter and what goes on inside different molecules. Get hands-on with explosions, dancing colours, links to the water cycle and peculiar oobleck. (1hr)        

Year 3 - 6

Who stole the priceless brass vase from the Swinburne Museum? Use clues left behind at the crime scene, including hair, ink and a shoeprint, to track down the thief. (1 hr)
