PrimeSCI! Spring School Holiday Science | Wantirna
Attention Junior Scientists! Get ready for three days filled with hands-on holiday science for curious kids from Foundation to Year 8 on the Swinburne Wantirna Campus.
Exciting workshop topics will include Physical and Chemical Change, Patterns and Shapes (with Mr Sinclair), Digestive System, and Marine Science (with Southern Ocean Education).
PrimeSCI! are also proud to offer limited FREE sessions for High Ability Foundation to Year 2 students funded by Department of Education Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series.
Science Workshops
Learn about different types of rocks and the processes that move them around the surface of the Earth. Examine specimens from our mineral collection while investigating weathering and erosion. Explore links between Earth's water cycle and rock cycle in hands-on activities. (1hr) Foundation - Year 4
Explore the magic of light as participants catch, bounce, bend, split, and focus light. Participants will love using the assortment of torches, mirrors, and lenses. (1hr) Year 2 - 6
Learn what heat is, the different ways it is produced, and how heat can be transferred through cleverly designed activities and exciting demonstrations. Start your education in thermodynamics here! (1hr) Foundation - Year 4
Step back in time and join Mr Sinclair in the high school science lab of the 1980s. Learn from demonstrations with unique equipment, combined with Ralph's clear explanations of using science and maths to create and explain patterns and shapes we see around us. What is the fastest shape to roll down a hill? What can we learn from old record players? Parents are welcome to stay and learn too! (1hr) Year 5 - 8
Explore the differences between physical and chemical change through a series of exciting investigations, and learn to explain how everyday phenomena occur at the particle level. (1hr) Year 2 - 6
What do we dig up from the Earth? Students identify samples from Australian mines and work out the uses of these minerals in our everyday lives. We can’t keep digging up and chopping down Earth’s resources forever, so students work in groups to make their own recycled paper. (1hr) Foundation - Year 2
Explore how light and sound are produced, how light and sound travel, and changes that occur when travelling through different materials. Fully funded by the Victorian Department of Education Victorian Challenge & Enrichment Series for High Ability participants. (1.5 hr) Foundation - Year 1
Follow food along the digestive tract and learn about how we taste, digest, and move food along our gut. Make poo to understand why it is important to eat enough vegetables. Participants are given the opportunity to touch real animal tongues and stomachs! (1.5hr) Foundation - Year 6
Who is the largest fish in the sea? What sort of animal is a whale? Examine amazing specimens and interact with fascinating rock pool animals in this workshop presented by Southern Ocean Education. (1.5hr) Foundation - Year (1.5 hr) Foundation - Year 6
