Seeing Atom Clouds, Seeing Equations

Friday 8th July 2005, 3.30PM, Seminar Room AR103, Graduate Research Centre.

We outline a simple and robust means for non-destructively imaging the column density of cold atom clouds. We then turn to the question of means to reconstruct the wave-function (complex order-parameter field) for a 2+1-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. Lastly, we outline some recent investigations into the question of how one may "measure" certain partial differential equations obeyed by 2+1-dimensional complex scalar wave-fields, given measurements of wave-field modulus.
