Optically-induced Lattices as Tunable Nonlinear Photonic Crystals

Dr Dragomir Neshev

Nonlinear Physics Center and Centre for Ultrahigh-bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS), Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, Australian National University.

3:30pm Friday 18 March, AR103 Seminar Room, Graduate Research Centre

This talk will present a novel concept for inducing optically tunable periodic structures in highly nonlinear photorefractive materials. It will discuss the theory and summarize experimental results demonstrating the key aspects of light propagation in these optically-induced periodic structures, such as excitation of Bloch waves and modifying their dispersion properties, beam shaping and interaction. This provides a novel way for an active control of light by light itself in optically-induced nonlinear photonic structures. The outcome of this fundamental research may open-up new directions for technological advances in the photonics with applications to all-optical switching and information storage.
