Coherence Effects in Two-Level Atomic Systems with Zeeman Degeneracy

11:00am Friday 6th May 2005, Seminar Room AR103, Graduate Research Centre

Two mutually coherent optical fields, interacting with an atomic two-level system with Zeeman degeneracy, results in coherence among Zeeman sublevels. Under specific conditions, the Zeeman coherence may produce EIT and also electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA). Recent experiments involving Zeeman coherence are reviewed. The origin of EIA is discussed. The temporal evolution of coherence resonances is addressed as well as the connections between coherence spectroscopy, optical pumping and nonlinear magneto-optical spectroscopy.
