Overview

The Undergraduate Certificate in Law (Pathway) develops the student’s basic understanding of the legal system, the rule of law and the legal profession. It prepares students for further studies in law and other related areas.

Study structure

Successful completion of the Undergraduate Certificate in Law (Pathway) requires students to complete units of study to the value of 50 credit points. All units of study are valued at 12.5 credit points unless otherwise stated.

  • Full-time study: 100 credit points/eight standard units of study per year

  • Part-time study: 50 credit points/four standard units of study per year

  • One credit point is equivalent to one hour of study per week per semester (including contact hours and private study)

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course students will be able to :

  • apply the principles and doctrines that underpin the fundamental areas of Australian law to foundational contexts
  • undertake research from a variety of sources to frame legal problems
  • communicate clearly and coherently to a range of audiences

Course rules

To qualify for the award of Undergraduate Certificate in Law (Pathway), students must complete 50 credit points comprising:

  • Three [3] Core units (37.5 credit points) AND
  • One [1] Core option unit from a list of available units (12.5 credit points).
     

To be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Laws and its associated double degrees via this pathway course, students are expected to maintain a credit average (60%) across the four units and successfully pass each unit on their first attempt.

Volume of learning

The Undergraduate Certificate in Law (Pathway) consists of 50 credit points. Units normally carry 12.5 credit points. A standard full-time load comprises four (4) units (50cp) in one semester, and a standard annual part-time load comprises two (2) units (25cp) per semester.


The volume of learning of the Undergraduate Certificate in Law (Pathway) is typically 6 months full-time.

Maximum Academic Credit

The maximum level of credit that can be granted for the Undergraduate Certificate in Law (Pathway) is 25 credit points (normally two units). This does not apply to students using this award to exit from the Swinburne Bachelor of Laws.
