Welcome from the Vice Chancellor - Prof Ian Young
On behalf of the University, I welcome all new and returning students. Undertaking tertiary study represents an important step in your life and choosing to study at Swinburne will help you make the most of your potential.
Swinburne has a strong history of providing quality, career-oriented education for both undergraduates and postgraduates. Swinburne graduates have the skills and knowledge that will help them find jobs and success in their careers.
In addition, Swinburne is one of the few Australian universities offering an extensive range of programs from apprenticeships to postgraduate courses. We also provide our students with a range of well-defined ‘pathways’ between our TAFE and Higher Education divisions.
The University offers a wide variety of postgraduate courses, ranging from graduate certificates through to PhDs in Social Sciences and Arts, Applied Science, Business and Innovation, Health and Human Services, Informatics (Computing and Information Technology), Engineering and Technology, Multimedia and Design.
The quality of the education we provide our students is critically important and we are very proud of the fact that in 2009, Swinburne was listed in the prestigious Shanghai Jiaotong rankings as one of the top 500 Universities in the world.
Swinburne’s strong vocational emphasis and our close links with industry ensure that our study programs keep pace with developments in the commercial sector. The University has a strong research focus that complements coursework programs.
In addition to developing the skills and knowledge that will help you find success in your career, Swinburne students have access to a wide range of transport, sporting, computer, library and student welfare facilities at each campus. You can find more information about these facilities on this website.
I welcome you to Swinburne and encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities available to you as a student at the University.

Welcome from Swinburne International
Swinburne is a multicultural university, where students come from over 60 countries around the world.
International students at Swinburne are encouraged to participate or get involved in various activities. You may be involved as an orientation host, as a mentor or by joining the Swinburne International Student Association (SISA). This is the quickest way to make friends and familiarise yourself with the Swinburne culture or be a member in one of Swinburne’s active Clubs or Societies.
Many International students at Swinburne are involved in the Clubs and Societies which many of them have set up. These Clubs and societies are run through the Student Union. If there is no club/society representing your country, then students are free and able to initiate one.
Swinburne has a close knit community feel where there is a great deal of support from both Swinburne staff and other international students, enabling you to expand your network of friends. It is also ok to address your lecturing staff by their first names. This may be difficult for some as you have been brought up to say Miss or Mr etc.
On arrival at Swinburne, the Swinburne International Office is your first point of contact. Swinburne International has a Student Life Team consisting of eight staff members who are dedicated to assist you from the time of your arrival through to the time of your departure. Within the team are four International Student Advisers who can assist students who may experience difficulties with their academic study. The Student Advisers can also act as a referral service should you need to be referred onto other support areas on campus.
The staff at Swinburne International congratulate you on making Swinburne your first choice as a study destination and wish you well in your study.
Should you require assistance with settling in, familiarising yourself with the campus or with how Swinburne operates in general, please contact the Student Life Team at Swinburne International.
Best wishes
