Ben Law
Advanced Diploma of Technology (Aviation)
"I joined course in early 2005, after moving to Melbourne from my home town to pursue my passion for flying.
In a period of 18 months I obtained my Private Licence, Commercial Licence, Instructors Rating and completed ATPL theory subjects, all while completing the Advanced Diploma.
Two years after graduating, I’m now a Grade 2 IFR instructor with the Oxford Aviation Academy, boasting over 1300 hours of experience.
The course was highly beneficial, proving critical for my movement into the workforce."
Miriam Henry
Swinburne business student
"Swinburne was my choice based on their practical learning focus. It has a good reputation and the ideal location of the Hawthorn campus was a bonus.
Throughout my time at Swinburne I have gained knowledge and skills in key areas of business through study and particularly the Industry-Based Learning (IBL) program. I completed valuable work experience at Boral, and as a result have secured an ongoing position as a Business Improvement Project Analyst. IBL has enhanced my understanding of coursework and will be a great advantage when applying for jobs in the future.
Swinburne is also a great place to network. I have been lucky to be involved in the Golden Key International Honour Society, where I participated in an Asia-Pacific conference in New Zealand. There are also plenty of events around campus which give students the opportunity to meet new people and take advantage of the university lifestyle. The diverse networks made during my course will be great contacts in future career endeavours."
Carla Zampaglione/s
Bachelor of Engineering (Product Design Engineering)
"I chose to study Product Design Engineering for a few reasons. First and foremost, it was what I wanted to do- a combination of design and science, which utilises both the right and left side of my brain. What also appealed to me about Swinburne was the size- I wanted to be noticed and wanted to benefit from smaller class sizes.
A major advantage Swinburne has over other institutions, in my opinion, is the practicality and ‘hands-on’ approach to the each course. So aside from a heightened logical way of thinking, I have acquired valuable skills in model-making, prototyping and manufacture.
I’ve done so much in my four years at Uni, I went on exchange at the University of Technology Troyes in France for 6 months! It meant that I kept learning my engineering subjects as well as learning French while living in a residence with the local students! I’m now on IBL, with a company called CobaltNiche. Next year I will go back to uni to complete my final year and then hopefully work in an industry similar to the one I am gaining experience in now."
Jane Curtis
Master of Arts (Media and Communications)
"I chose Swinburne because there was a wide range of subjects offered and a lot of flexibility in what
I could study. Other universities seemed a lot narrower in their range, focusing just on journalism or just on multimedia. Swinburne’s course structure is open to specialisation but is also flexible enough to allow you to try other disciplines and get a well-rounded knowledge base and skills in journalism, digital media, online communications and new media arts, if that’s what you’re looking for.
I have gained a theoretical understanding and context of journalism in the digital age, and I’ve gotten a much better grasp and understanding of major trends and concepts in new media.
I have also gained confidence in my abilities and ideas through the ongoing support of lecturers - this has made a really huge difference to me.
My favourite aspects of the course have been the hands-on projects – creating and editing audio, video and online pieces – and writing articles for and participating in the online communities set up for some classes in the course, through class blogs and social networks. And of course the delicious offhand morsels of information - interesting websites, projects, ideas and commentators - that lecturers throw to you during class and really get you inspired and thinking."
