This two-day workshop aims to help therapists in managing posture and promoting function and participation for people with complex seating needs.

Objectives

Therapists completing this workshop will be able to:

  • identify people at risk of developing non-reducible postural asymmetry
  • describe associated risks to wellbeing and participation
  • describe a 24-hour approach to postural care
  • use three outcome measures to evaluate seating interventions
  • execute a MAT evaluation in supine and sitting for people with limited seating ability and postural asymmetry
  • describe equipment parameters to meet the person's needs
  • differentiate between reducible and non-reducible postural assymetries and describe associated seating strategies
  • select seating solutions that promote development of seating ability and function
  • evaluate clinical and functional applications of modular wheelchair cushions and back supports
  • identify indicators for custom fabricated seating

Content

This workshop will combine slide presentations, case studies and practical hands-on sessions. People living with disability will be invited to support our learning for a practical MAT evaluation session. Participants will be asked to develop a case study to present at the end of the second day. Participants will also receive the presentation handouts and copies of assessment tools.

Equipment used in the workshops is for consolidating assessment skills and knowledge. The workshop does not intend to outline all equipment options nor recommend specific product.

This workshop is one of the three wheelchair workshops organised by Swinburne's Medical Technology Victoria (MedTechVic) in partnership with Deb Wilson from New Zealand's Seating To Go.

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.
