Overview
Using a strengths based nursing framework this unit will examine chronic and complex health conditions and associated nursing care. This unit will build on concepts covered which inform critical thinking, evidence based practice and the ability to work as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Discuss the holistic approach required to care for individuals and families in relation to chronic health conditions
- Apply knowledge of the underlying pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of selected chronic conditions
- Conduct a comprehensive and systematic nursing assessment for individual with a chronic conditions and/or co-morbidities
- Utilise an evidence based framework to develop a plan of comprehensive, safe and effective nursing care to achieve identified health outcomes
- Demonstrate an ability to work in consultation with individuals/groups, significant others and the interdisciplinary health care team in the clinical setting

Pathophysiology, Clinical Manifestations, Assessment and Management of chronic and complex presentations related to:Â
- Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, Neurological, Endocrine, Renal and Musculoskeletal systemsÂ
- Pathophysiology, Clinical Manifestations Assessment and management, of chronic and complex presentations related to pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care. Â
- Fluid and electrolyte balance, intravenous fluid therapy and intravenous fluid administrationÂ
- Management of wound/drain, stoma, insertion of indwelling catheters, under water sealed drainage, central venous access devices, venipuncture, electrocardiographÂ
- Nursing leadership and the interdisciplinary team in the management of chronic and complex illness
