The Product Design Studio will introduce a range of Product Design skills including innovative idea generation, visualisation and sketching techniques for communication of both external and internal product detail. Additionally, the development of engineering methodologies, such as, Reverse Engineering and the generation of Product Design Specifications to document complex product design requirements will be applied to the Studio project. The Prototyping workshop module will cover Safety Workshop practices using hand and machine techniques, including material selection and prototyping strategies to communicate and make three dimensional forms, form studies and prototypes.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Apply practical engineering methodologies, such as reverse engineering processes, to determine effective and efficient design (K4, S1, S2, S3)
  • Apply idea generation techniques and consider user demographics to achieve innovative and appropriate product design outcomes (K5, A1, A2, A3, A5, A6)
  • Interpret internal and external product requirements and generate product design specifications
  • Address a range of product design and development skills including engineering documentation and prototyping into design projects (S1, S3, S4, A1, A2)
  • Use and appropriately select sketching techniques to effectively communicate design intent (A2)
  • Apply safe prototyping practices in the prototyping workshop using both hand and machinery techniques, including material and prototyping strategy selection (S2, S3, A2, A6)
