Alternative English language entry

You may not require an IELTS or TOEFL score to apply for a Swinburne course if you:

Applicants from Swinburne English Language Centre

Students who have completed English for Academic Purposes can progress directly to Swinburne. Entry is subject to all other conditions being met and achieving the required results in your English language course:

English for Academic Purposes (Level 4)

Foundation Years
Vocational Education: Certificate

Overall 65% (all skills 65% or above)

UniLink Diploma
Vocational Education: Diploma

Overall 70% (all skills 65% or above)
English for Academic Purposes (Level 5)

Undergraduate

Overall 70% (all skills 65% or above)

Postgraduate*

Overall 70% (all skills 65% or above)

You will not need to do the IELTS or TOEFL unless your student visa requires it. Further information regarding visa requirements and applications is available from the Australian Border Force website.

Some individual courses require a lower or higher IELTS score.

Applicants with English as the language of instruction

Secondary and/or tertiary studies at an institution where English is the only/main language of instruction and assessment may qualify students to meet the English language requirements for study at Swinburne. 

Students must have satisfactorily completed the equivalent of two years of full-time study (four standard full-time semesters), not more than two years prior to commencing your studies at Swinburne. 

Documentary evidence in the form of a letter or transcript is required from the institution at which the study was undertaken. Each application will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants with International Baccalaureate

Minimum of 4 in English A1 or A2 (Higher and Standard Levels) or minimum of 5 in English B (Higher Level).

Applicants from certain countries

Denmark

Studentereksamen grade 7 in English Level A or grade 10 in English Level B.

Germany

Fachhochschulereife with at least 3 in English, or,

Abitur with at least 7 in English, or,

DAAD language test with minimum of B in all sections.

Hong Kong

AS Level will be considered in GCE A Level.

Level 4 or better in English language for Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education.

Netherlands

Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs minimum 7 in English.

Norway

Vitnemal den Videragaende Skole minimum 4 in English.

Singapore

A score of C or better in the General Paper in the Singapore Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level), or

A grade of C or better in English Language in the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level).

Sweden

VG in English.

UK

A score of C or better in English in the Cambridge General Certificate of Education "O" level or AS level or Advanced level.
