Welcome and Introduction from the Deputy Dean (Research), Professor Michael Gilding

Welcome to Research in the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences!

Research within our Faculty is organised into four research centres and four research groups of staff and students with similar areas of expertise and research interest. These research centres and groups bring staff and students together to exchange knowledge and develop new projects in the areas of Biotechnology and Life Sciences, Neurosciences and Psychology, and Humanities and Social Science.

For a full review of research undertaken within the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences during 2006, please read the Faculty Research Report. Highlights include:

  • 22 Completions: 13 PhDs, 8 Professional Doctorates and 1 Masters by research
  • 28 book chapters, 99 journal articles and 27 refereed conference papers, amounting to 159 DEST points (an increase from 121 points in 2005)
  • Research income of $3,412,163, including 30 current National Competitive Grants worth more than $1.7 million
  • A vigorous seminar program, including the cross-disciplinary Double Take series.

Brain Sciences Institute
conducts research in the areas of cognitive neuroscience, psychopharmacology, clinical psychology, and psychological assessment.

Institute for Social Research
conducts research which advances our understanding of the social world.

Our Tier Two Research Centres

  • Other Centres and Groupings

    • Bio-S
      is an interdisciplinary and multi-faculty grouping of Swinburne's biotechnology, bioengineering and biomedical science researchers.

    • Complex Processes Research Group
      strives to advance cross-disciplinary research into complex processes

    • SABRI
      Swinburne Autism Bio-Research Initiative (SABRI) is a response to the urgent need for quality research to be conducted into the biological bases of Autism.

    • Sensory Neuroscience Laboratory
      undertakes research into a variety of sensory-related aspects of physiological performance.

    • Swin-PSYCHE
      Swinburne Psychological Clinical Health and Evaluation (Swin-PsyCHE) is a research unit that incorporates staff from Swinburne Psychology and encompasses a wide-ranging skills base including clinical, counselling, health, and developmental psychologists, methodologists, and program evaluators.
