Adding a Unit of Study

Friday, 2 March 2012 is the deadline for adding Semester 1, (TP1) units of study for all students (subject to availability and prerequisite requirements) No further additions will be accepted beyond that date.

Change of Personal Details

If you have moved address, or wish to change your emergency contact details, you must notify Swinburne as soon as possible. These changes can be made online at www.swinburne.edu.au/ studentoperations/services/swinlink.html

An Amendment to Personal Details form can also be downloaded from www.swinburne.edu.au/ corporate/registrar/student/forms_level3.htm

Alternatively, the form can be collected and lodged at the relevant Faculty Administration Office or the Student Information Centre (SIC).

Please note: In the case of a name change, you are required to supply certified documentation (such as marriage certificate). Name changes cannot be made online.

Enrolment / Re-Enrolment for 2012

In early October 2011, you will receive an email from the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences advising you of the online procedures for re-enrolment. Please ensure that you re-enrol online by the due date as late re-enrolment penalties will apply.

FEE-HELP/HECS-HELP

FEE-HELP/HECS-HELP enables eligible fee-paying postgraduate or undergraduate students to obtain a loan from the Commonwealth Government to pay all or part of their tuition fees.

Fees

Confirmations of Enrolment/Tax Invoices and Direct Deposit forms for payment of Semester 2 fees have been sent to all students. Students who do not pay fees by the due date will be charged a late payment penalty of $200.

Graduation

All students expecting to complete their degree need to be aware that there are changes to the process for applying as well as the venue and schedule. Details are available: www.swinburne.edu.au/ studentoperations/graduation/index.html

All ceremonies will be held at the Melbourne Convention Centre, 1 Convention Centre Place, South Wharf.

Leave of Absence or Withdrawal from Program

A leave of absence is a period of approved absence by a student from the current program of study. Enrolled students are eligible to apply for leave of absence for a maximum of one academic year. You must normally have successfully completed at least one academic semester before you are eligible to take a leave of absence.

If you wish to take a Leave of Absence or Withdraw from Program, please note the dates for withdrawal from units of study listed under the Amendment to Enrolment section.

An application for a Leave of Absence or Withdrawal from Program must be made in writing on the appropriate form and submitted to the relevant Faculty Administration Office. Notification by email is not sufficient, nor is verbal or written advice to the program manager or unit of study convenor. Procedure for Amendment to Enrolment

If you wish to ammend you enrolment you must complete an Application to Ammend enrolment form at http://www.swinburne.edu.au/corporate/registrar/student/Enrol_Amend_HE.pdf and submit it to the Faculty Office

Unit of study convenors' signatures are not required.

  • Check class availability - before amending unit, check unit of study's timetable availability and space in classes in the Timetable
  • Complete an Amendment to Enrolment form and submit to the Faculty Administration Office by appropriate dates.
  • Timetable unit of study on Allocate+ (on-campus units only)

48 hours after you amend your enrolment you must access Allocate+ to timetable your new unit. As timetable options may be extremely limited, you must be prepared to timetable yourself into the places available on Allocate+.

You will not be permitted to enter a class unless you are enrolled and timetabled into that specific class using Allocate+.

Your official results are available to view on line at: my.swinburne.edu.au

  • Enter your student number and your password
  • Click on to My Results
  • View your results

Permitted without financial penalty until Wednesday 31 August and without academic penalty until Friday 7 October.

These free workshops have been especially designed to assist students to be proactive and effectively manage their academic progress. The workshops will be offered each semester.

Academic Support / Student Advisor

John Schwartz is the FLSS Student Adviser / Academic Support. His work provides advice and academic support to...

  • Incoming TAFE GES students.

This focused attention is designed to reduce the overall attrition level of these students within the faculty.

John conducts a series of intensive week long "Boot Camps" prior to the commencement of each semester. In these lectures and seminars the following areas are extensively covered.

  • Overcoming the barriers to academic success.
  • Getting the most out of lectures and tutorials.
  • Successful study techniques.
  • Time management skills.
  • Setting realistic goals.
  • Planning and writing essays, assignments and reports.
  • Preparing for oral class presentations.
  • Preparing for exams.

John is involved in careful follow up work which can then proceed throughout the academic year. With the cooperation and advice provided by unit conveners, lecturers and tutors John can keep in, touch and further advise individual students who have started failing assignments / tests or essays and / or if their attendance record is has dropped off.

Remember, you need to register your interest online if you wish to undertake IBL next year. All registrations are acknowledged. There may be limited placements available for eligible students midyear. Find out more about how you can get paid full-time industry experience before you graduate in an area relevant to studies. Attend an IBL information session at one of the following times. You can also check out the Faculty IBL website, or collect further Information from outside the IBL Office AS326. IBL Information sessions will also be held again in August.

Due to Australian government regulations, the Industry-Based Learning program is currently not available to international students.

Last to Complete/Supplementary Assessment

Final year students who fail only one final year unit of study may be eligible to apply for supplementary assessment. Applications should be lodged, no later than the five (5) working days after the publication of results in the final semester.

Plagiarism

The University treats plagiarism and cheating very seriously. Penalties include expulsion from the course.

Special Consideration

If special consideration is required for work completed during the semester, applications must be lodged no later than three working days after the exam, test or due date of the assignment.

You may apply for special consideration if you sit an exam and extenuating circumstances such as poor health are proven to have affected your performance.

Note that special examinations will only be granted if you have met with all assessment requirements during the semester. Application forms, available from the relevant Faculty Administration Office, must be accompanied by appropriate evidence and lodged no later than 5pm on the third working day after the conclusion of the exam.

Please note: The relevant section of the application form must be completed by your doctor if your application is based on medical grounds. Students with an ongoing medical condition should register with Disability Support Services at the commencement of the semester. Study Support and Academic Skills

The Study Support Program is provided through the Access Department and provides individual and small group tuition to students at no extra cost. Study Support helps students improve their academic writing, reading, research, note-taking and presentation skills.

Check your timetable on the web for changes prior to commencing on-campus classes for week one.

You must attend classes at the times you are registered for on Allocate+ http://allocate.swin.edu.au/aplus/apstudent

Classes may be cancelled at short notice due to insufficient numbers. Students will be re-allocated to remaining available classes for the Unit of Study.

Please note that full-time on-campus students are expected to be available to attend all classes from Monday to Friday. Work commitments, distance from University, wanting to be in the same class as a friend are NOT deemed valid reasons for full-time students not being able to attend scheduled classes.

After Dark Bus Service

The Swinburne Student Amenities Association provides a free bus service during each semester to take you from the Hawthorn Campus to your car or local residence after dark.

The bus leaves from outside the AGSE Building, Corner John and Wakefield Streets approximately every 30 minutes between 7.00pm and 10.00pm. For all enquiries please contact: SSAA Hawthorn on 9214 5445.

Free Swimming Pool Access

Did you know Swinburne students have free access to the pool facilities at the Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Linda Crescent Hawthorn? The pool is 50 metres in length and heated to 27 degrees Celsius - perfect for swimming in summer and winter! Just present your current student ID card to the front desk to obtain your pool pass card. For seasonal opening hours check the website www.hawthorn.ymca.org.au

Parking

Student parking is available in the multi-deck car park in Wakefield Street on a fee-paying basis of $6.50 per day ($4.00 after 4.00pm). Daily receipts/tickets should be retained on exiting the multi-deck car park if you wish to re-enter and exit the car park on the same day.
