Biography

Dr. Matthew Parnell is a sustainability academic and practitioner with over thirty years professional experience of applying sustainability in the built environment, education, research, business and social enterprise. He is a published author, researcher and educator, including ten years experience as a University lecturer in sustainable development at the University of Tasmania School of Architecture and the Technology Education Course at Southern Cross University. He also has experience at management level in commercial, academic and non-government sectors. For ten years prior to joining Swinburne University he ran his own sustainability consultancy, Greensynergy Consulting, working on sustainability projects in urban, rural, regional and remote Australia. Areas of consulting activity included sustainability services in green building, energy assessment, education and cultural change through partnerships with designers, developers, business, industry and community organizations, and government agencies. He graduated with a PhD in Sustainable Development from Murdoch University in 2012, under the supervision of Professor Peter Newman. The research program investigated sustainability culture and its implications for sustainability practice. Themes explored through the research are now central to his teaching, research and professional sustainability practice.
