Aims and objectives

This unit was discontinued at the end of 2015. 
 
This unit provides students with a broad overview of the primary historical developments in the Asian region. These include the rise and fall of civilisations, the role of imperial ambitions in the region, and the spread of independence and democratic movements. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the historical evolution and diversity of cultural practice in the region. In doing so this unit equips students with a long-term perspective against which to understand the rise of Asia and the Asian Century in a global perspective. Unit

After successfully completing this unit, students will be able to:
1. Understand the critical turning points in Asian history in the 19th and 20th centuries
2. Critically evaluate the role of colonisation and nationalism in the creation of nation-states in the region
3. Develop an appreciation for the different ways that societies function in the region and the role of history in shaping these differences
4. Debate the role of culture and politics in shaping the Asian century
