Leading global information technology, consulting and business process services company, Wipro, and Swinburne have announced the appointment of Professor Ryszard Kowalczyk as Professorial Chair of Artificial Intelligence.

Professor Kowalczyk’s appointment follows the announcement of the establishment of the Wipro-Swinburne Digital Innovation Centre to pioneer digital innovation in select industry sectors with impact in both Australia and globally.

“We are excited to take the next step in our partnership with Wipro by establishing the Wipro Chair in Artificial Intelligence at Swinburne. This strategic investment is focused in particular on the creation of innovative digital solutions, products and services for the health and smart cities sectors,” says Swinburne Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Aleksandar Subic.

“Professor Kowalczyk has established an excellent research track record of working with government and industry in the domain of artificial intelligence (AI), producing important research outcomes and commercial benefits. He will provide strong leadership for our collaborative work with Wipro, including research, innovation, commercialisation and engagement activities.”

Professor Kowalczyk is currently the Director of Swinburne’s Key Lab for Intelligent Software Systems and the head of the AI and Intelligent Agent Technology research group at Swinburne. Prior to joining Swinburne in 2003, he led AI research at CSIRO and held senior research roles at a number of multinational organisations.

AI and Automation Head for Wipro Australia, Sriram Bhargav, will work with Professor Kowalczyk to establish research and development tracks between Swinburne and Wipro.
