Swinburne partners with Brazil to focus on smart industries

Swinburne is the only Australian member of the new National Institute of Science and Technology on Smart Industry, supported by the Brazilian National Research Council.

The institute, led by the Federal University of Minas Gerais, involves 12 Brazilian universities, 14 companies and eight international universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Australia.

“We are pleased that our research in intelligent systems has been awarded through this highly competitive program. This success provides Swinburne a new platform for research engagement in Brazil,” Swinburne Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), Professor Aleksandar Subic says.

The National Institute of Science and Technology on Smart Industry aims to boost innovation and effectiveness in sectors such as industrial automation, energy, mobility, security, water resources, and manufacturing.

Swinburne’s involvement in the institute is led by Professor Ryszard Kowalczyk who also leads the Intelligent Agent Technology and Smart Energy Management research at Swinburne.

“The new collaboration will allow us to expand our research activities on smart industries with Brazil, while working closely with leading international research and industry partners.

“We will focus on cyber-physical systems engineering, embedded intelligence in cyber-physical system units, learning from large industrial datasets, and smart energy management for industries of the future,” Professor Kowalczyk says.
