“Super-Six” awarded Swinburne Excellence in Sustainable Product Design award

An innovative heating system that dramatically cuts energy usage and its impact on the environment has been awarded the Swinburne University of Technology Excellence in Sustainable Product Design award at the 2014 United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) World Environment Day Awards.
Seeley International’s Braemar “Super-Six” Ducted Gas Heater, the world’s first six star rated ducted gas heating range, received the award, which was presented by Swinburne Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, Professor Jennelle Kyd, during a ceremony at Sydney’s Luna Park on Friday 13 June.
Professor Kyd said the heater was a stand-out entry in the awards, being the most energy efficient ducted gas heating system currently available to households.
“Seeley International were named as the winners of this award as they have set a new industry standard for heating systems around the world,” Professor Kyd said.
“The “Super-Six” ducted gas heater range uses 30% less energy than a three star ducted gas heater, which not only makes heating much more affordable for consumers, but it is also ensures that there is very little environmental impact.”
Now in its second year, the Swinburne University of Technology Excellence in Sustainable Product Design award is given to a product design that acts as a catalyst for change, encouraging designs that have a positive impact on the environment, minimise consumption, uses renewable energy sources and eliminate the use of toxic substances.
Founder and Executive Chairman of Seeley International, Frank Seeley AM, said it was a great honour for the organisation to be recognised as a leader in sustainable design practices.
“Seeley International was delighted to be recognised for its commitment to innovation and energy efficiency,” Mr Seeley said.
“The great thing about the “Super-Six” range is that overall, the heater can operate much more efficiently over a wider range of heat load conditions, which means a reduction in CO2 emissions and running costs.”
Professor Kyd said that Swinburne’s sponsorship of the Excellence in Sustainable Product Design award reflects the university’s commitment to sustainability.
“Recently Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus opened its second 5-star green rated university building, the Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre (AMDC),” Professor Kyd said.
“The AMDC was built from materials that encourage natural light and self-generation of electricity, ensuring it is environmentally friendly. This is one of our many ongoing initiatives that demonstrates the university’s commitment to being a positive contributor to the environment.”
Each year, in support of United Nations Environment Program World Environment Day, the UNAA recognises innovative and outstanding environmental programs and initiatives through its World Environment Day Awards.
The 2013 Winner of the Swinburne University Excellence in Sustainable Product Design Award was eco-friendly light bulb company Brightgreen.
