In Summary

Psychotherapist and author of best-selling book The Happiness Trap, Dr Russ Harris, will be guest speaker at a Swinburne health and wellbeing workshop this month.

Dr Harris’ workshop is based on the philosophies of The Happiness Trap, which argues that popular ideas on happiness are misleading and destined to make people miserable. He steers away from popular techniques such as ‘‘positive thinking’’ and ‘‘positive affirmations’’, and focuses on the principles of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) to help people achieve wellbeing and fulfilment.

In his workshop, supported by the Swinburne Psychology Clinic and the Stroke Association of Victoria, Dr Harris will demonstrate simple skills to handle difficult thoughts and feelings.  These skills aim to help people effectively deal with the stress that life inevitably brings.

Local Federal MP Josh Frydenberg will open the one-day workshop at Swinburne’s Advanced Technologies Centre.  Funds raised from the workshop will go to The Stroke Association of Victoria and its forthcoming project My Care Box, a national campaign to help two and a half million Australians who work or volunteer as carers.
