Flying in?

Melbourne has two major airports:

  • Melbourne Airport, also called Tullamarine Airport, is a 25-minute drive from the Melbourne city centre. All international flights and most domestic flights to Melbourne arrive here, so chances are you will too!
  • Avalon Airport is a 45-minute drive from the Melbourne city centre. Some domestic and international flights to Melbourne arrive here.
Note: we do not currently offer the Harlan free bus service from Avalon Airport. Transport options are available.
  • Departure board showing Australian destinations.

    Domestic Arrivals

If you're flying domestically, you’ll be flying into either Melbourne Airport or Avalon Airport.
You're not usually required to go through a passport entry control point or meet any customs requirements when travelling within Australia, however quarantine restrictions are in place for some domestic travel. This means certain food and plant items cannot be brought into the state of Victoria.

Getting from the airport into the city

Getting to and from the airport in Melbourne is easy. As a Swinburne student, there are a few different options available to you to ensure you arrive safely:

We provide a transport service from Melbourne airport to your accommodation address with Harlan. This is free if you’re beginning your first course at Swinburne.
Note: The Harlan service is not currently available from Avalon Airport.

If you are under 18 years of age, you must use the Harlan service. You or your education agent must provide your arrival flight details and delivery address in Melbourne to the Swinburne U18 International Student Adviser, who will arrange the airport pickup booking and confirm this with you.
If you are over 18 years of age, you may use the Harlan service if you choose (or you can check out the other options below).

Before arriving in Melbourne, use Harlan’s online booking system to arrange your pick-up service.

Please note, if you are arriving with family members who will also be using the Harlan service, their transport costs must be paid to the Harlan driver on arrival. The cost per person is A$80. Please include the number of people travelling with you in the ‘comments’ section of the online booking form.
If your flight is delayed or you change to another flight, please contact Harlan by phone on +61 3 9354 5025 or +61 412 073 749.

Meeting the Harlan driver

The Harlan driver will wait for you next to the Groups and Tours sign at the southern end of the Arrivals hall in the international terminal (Terminal 2) on the ground floor.
If you’re arriving in Melbourne on a domestic flight, collect your luggage and go to the international terminal (Terminal 2). Meet the Harlan driver in the Arrivals hall on the ground floor.
