Welcome to the Swinburne Science Experience 2022

If you’re in Year 9 or 10 and and are excited about science, then you’ll want to read on! Come to our Hawthorn campus to learn and explore STEM through interactive, hands-on workshops and demonstrations.

About the program

Explore the universe in virtual reality, conduct experiments in our chemistry labs and explore the applications of the world-class Australian Synchrotron.

Our three-day program encourages curiosity and explores the never-ending possibilities of science.

With a focus on real-world applications, you’ll get to:

  • meet leaders from the scientific community
  • work with innovative technologies in our specialised labs and facilities
  • watch out-of-this-world science demonstrations
  • participate in hands-on workshops that will challenge and excite.

Join us for our action-packed July program and see where a career in science can take you.

Funded places

We have a limited number of funded places for students who would not be able to attend without financial support. If this is you, please fill in the confidential application form.

Our workshops*

Cyber Security

Our lives are closely linked to the world of the internet, mobile computing, and electronic media. Cybersecurity, the protection of systems, networks, and programs, is becoming a critical aspect of our every day lives. In this hands-on workshop you will discover how web-based vulnerabilities work, different types of cyber attacks and the impact they can have

Chemistry in Action

Chemistry is full of visually stimulating spectacles that can amaze everyone, from young children to chemistry veterans! This presentation gives students the opportunity to see some of these experiments performed, along with a discussion of the science behind them and the value of the chemistry involved.

OzGrav

Discover the world of black holes and warped spacetime! OzGrav explores the historic first detections of gravitational waves and how we now understand the extreme physics of black holes and warped spacetime. Come with us as we delve into this new window on the Universe.

Tour the Australian Synchrotron

The Australian Synchrotron is a world-class national research facility that uses accelerator technology to produce a powerful source of light – x-rays and infrared radiation – a million times brighter than the sun.

The facility has 10 different experimental stations, or beamlines, which harness that light, so researchers can see the fundamental structure and composition of materials on scales ranging from the atomic to the macroscopic with a level of detail, speed and accuracy not possible in conventional laboratories.

*Please note that our workshops are subject to change.
