Presented by the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science and Forensicare, in partnership with ASCO.

Dual diagnosis refers to the co-occurrence of serious mental health and substance abuse problems, and is associated with poorer outcomes than mental health or substance abuse problems on their own. Dual diagnosis is associated with higher rates of offending behaviour, with approximately 74% of patients in Victoria’s Forensic Mental Health Hospital (Thomas Embling Hospital) having a substance abuse or dependence disorder across their life-span; and in the Victorian prison system, people with a serious mental illness are much more likely to have a substance use disorder than those without.

This training aims to enhance participants’ conceptual understanding of dual diagnosis and the association with offending behaviours, as well as provide practical guidance on how to have collaborative conversations with people about their substance misuse, mental health problems and offending behaviours.

Speakers

Ms Jemma Stevenson - Senior Forensic Alcohol and Other Drug Clinician for ASCO, at Thomas Embling Hospital.

Dr Kylie Thomson - Clinical and Forensic Psychologist and Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science.
