Professor Joe ChicharoDeputy Vice-Chancellor, External Engagement (Interim)

Professor Joe Chicharo OM has had a distinguished academic career in the Higher Education sector spanning 38 years. He is the current (interim) Deputy Vice-Chancellor External Engagement at the Swinburne University of Technology. His most recent role was that of Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wollongong. Prior to this position, his senior executive experience included serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Strategy) and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University of Wollongong. 

Professor Chicharo has also served as Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Head of School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering. He has an excellent track record as a researcher, having published over 250 highly cited and influential research papers in international journals and confrences. He has attracted significant levels of competitive grants and industry funding to support his research. 

Professor Chicahro was the Research Director of the CRC for Smart Internet Technology and Director of the flagship Telecommunications and IT research Institue at the University of Wollongong. He served as a member and then Chair of the Mathematics and Information Communications College of Experts Panel at the Australian Research Council. He also Chaired the Mathematics, Information and Computer Sciences Panel for the first Exellence in Research for Australia during 2010, He is currently a member of the Australian Higher Education Standards Panel (a ministerial appointment).
