Finance - Concessions


As a student, you are eligible for a number of concessions on goods and services, which can save you money. Below is a list of concessions for which you may be eligible:

Health Care Card

If you have a current health care card you are eligible for the following concessions:

  • Prescription items listed under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme at a reduced cost for each item on a prescription.
  • Outpatient dental services at the Royal Dental Hospital, Community Health Centres and country public hospitals.
  • Free ambulance/air ambulance travel in Victoria either in an emergency or on the recommendation of a medical practitioner.
  • Concessional rate on gas and electricity bills between May and November.
  • Free eye examinations and low cost glasses through the "Clinical Services" of the Victorian College of Optometry.
  • Discount on car registration, and
  • Concession tickets on public transport.

Travel

Full time students are eligible to purchase a Student Concession Card which entitles you to concession fares on the Victorian public transport network. This includes, trains, buses and trams. Full-time students are also eligible for discount fares on country, interstate and overseas travel on buses, trains and aeroplanes. Student Concession cards can be purchased from major train stations or at http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/

Possession of a current Health Care Card (apply at Centrelink) or Victorian Public Transport Concession Card (ask at your campus Student Information Centre for an application form and take to your nearest railway station (currently $9) allows students to purchase concession tickets on public transport.


Entertainment

On the presentation of your student ID card you are eligible for concessions at the movies, theatres, sporting events and tourist attractions such as the Art Gallery. Thus, it is important that you carry your student ID card with you at all times, not just when you are on campus.


International Student Identify Card

Full-time students who are travelling overseas are eligible for an International Student Identity Card from Student Travel Australia. This card offers a variety of discounts, including transport, admissions to theatre and museums, travel insurance, shops and restaurants. This card is available online.


Swinburne Book Shop Co-operative

All students are eligible to become members of the Swinburne Book Shop Co-operative. It costs $20.00 and it entitles you to lifetime membership. Once you are a member you are entitled to 8% off most purchases.


Free Legal Service

SSAA provides a generalist legal service for students. Book an appointment through your SSAA office on campus. More details are on their website.
