Bachelor
of Film and Television
Swinburne
Equity Merit Study Grant recipient 2006
Because of the scholarship I have been able to focus on my study
and settle into Uni without the worry of having to find a job
straight away.
Moving from the country to a city I was not familiar with, and
being amongst people that I didn’t know, would have been
much more daunting if I had to also worry about earning extra
money to allow me to live on campus.
I am enjoying my Film & Television course and the extra
time and effort I have been able to put into my study thanks
to the scholarship has shown in my results.
Andrew Cousins
Bachelor of Engineering
(Robotics and Mechatronics)
Commonwealth Learning Scholarship
recipient 2004-2007
I was awarded the Commonwealth Learning Scholarship in my second
year of studies, it has helped relieve the financial burden
of studying – including living and study expenses such
as costly text books. Especially after moving to Melbourne from
country Victoria to study.
The university has provided me with much support outside studies,
including financial assistance for an overseas study trip, on-campus
accommodation and support for my number one preference position
for Industry Based Learning.
With only one more year of studies ahead, I am more than prepared
to face the professional world for a promising career in engineering.

Bachelor of Health
Science (Public & Environmental Health)
IBM Swinburne Equity Scholarship
recipient 2006
Besides doing my assignments on time and doing research on my
assignments at home and on campus, my knowledge on how to use
computers and keyboards has gradually improved.
Above all, having a laptop computer has essentially reduced
the cost of printing as I save all my learning materials on
my computer and access them any time, anywhere I like. I also
use it at lectures, which is really fantastic. My academic performance
has improved from what it was to what it is now. Thanks.
Alysha Sandow
Bachelor of Design
(Communication Design)
Swinburne Equity Merit Study Grant
recipient 2006
Throughout high school I had a keen interest in arts related
activities but my school in Albury Wodonga did not have any
design courses available. By moving to Melbourne a new world
of Design opened up for me.
Living away from home and the cost of living has been difficult,
the scholarship definitely helped.
Dreams are possible! I would never have thought that I could
get into uni and become a graphic designer. But I have!!
Kieran Cummins
Bachelor of Business
(Accounting/Finance)
Commonwealth Learning Scholarship
recipient 2006-2007
Coming to the big smoke has been an incredible experience, opening
up many opportunities. However it also brings many costs that
I had never considered, financially draining! The scholarship
has reduced the amount of time I have to spend working, enabling
me to get involved in more community work. I plan to work for
an aid organisation. The community work will give me experience
I need, and my business degree will give me skills that are
increasingly sought after/important in these organisations.
This is a fantastic generous initiative by the government, one
that will help to encourage young people to make a difference.
Swinburne is to be commended for granting access and administrating
this scholarship. Thankyou Swinburne for making my life much
easier and less stressful.
Bree Cartledge
Advance Diploma of
Community Services Management
IBM Swinburne Equity Scholarship
recipient 2006
Receiving an IBM Notebook computer has greatly enhanced my studies
at Swinburne TAFE. I have two young children and used to have
to organize care for them and then go to the local library to
access the internet. That was exhausting! Now I can work on
the computer while my daughters play in the lounge-room in front
of me.
I am enjoying my Uni experience so much now I am looking at
further study after my course is finished! Without my new Laptop
I may not have been able to continue studying. I am very grateful!

Advanced Diploma of
Business (Public Relations)

“Recuperation and renewal!”
These two words are the keystones of my life since suffering
a stroke 8 years ago. Unable to return to my occupation as a
computer programmer/analyst because of residual cognitive problems
I have established an entirely new life. Education is one key
to this new life.
I study Public Relations at Prahran and the creative writing
component is a shot of adrenalin to my system. The IBM ThinkPad
provides me with the means and opportunities to write, create,
and contribute.
Ryan Marr
Bachelor of Engineering
(Mechanical Engineering)
Commonwealth Learning Scholarship
recipient 2004-2007
Swinburne Equity
Merit Study Grant recipient 2003
I grew up in Robinvale, a small rural town east of Mildura,
Victoria with my 3 siblings on my parents 25 acre vineyard.
The culture shock of Melbourne’s fast pace, being away
from home and having to make a completely new cirlce of friends
combined to make a daunting experience. However, living among
students in similar circumstances at the Hawthorn Student Residences
made the move a lot easier.
Doing Industry Based Learning as a part of my studies has been
a huge weight off my shoulders, as not only do I have my foot
in the door to my future career, but I am learning a lot, and
can relate my studies to my work.
The scholarships have made life so much easier. Especially as
a student living on my own with no mum around to make lunch
for me! It is not everyday somebody gives you money to learn,
and it is a key motivator for me.

Bachelor of Engineering

Glenferrie Rotary and Rural
& Regional Equity Merit Scholarship recipient 2004
Commonwealth Learning Scholarship
recipient 2004-2007
To students who are thinking about applying for these scholarships,
just do it, it is very achievable! The financial assistance
is fantastic not to mention the on going recognition when applying
for jobs!
I am currently completing a Bachelor of Engineering in Product
Design. Although I feel it carries a demanding workload, the
content of the course keeps me motivated and on track to graduate
with Honors in November 2008. Next year my studies will reward
me with a paid Industry Based Learning position at GM Holden.
I will be employed as a Technical Designer, working on future
model and concept cars!
