Support for study and living expenses


A variety of grants and scholarships are available to local undergraduate degree students from low socio-economic backgrounds or experiencing significant financial disadvantage.

Grants and scholarships on offer to assist with study and living expenses include:

 

These grants and scholarships have been made possible through funding provided by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Higher Education Participation and Partnership Program (HEPPP).

Due to Commonwealth funding requirements TAFE, postgraduate and international students are ineligible to apply for these benefits. However, Student Services provide a range of other support mechanisms for students. Please go to the Student Services web page and Scholarships web page for more information.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Local undergraduate degree students;
  • Enrolled full time. Exceptional circumstances for studying part time will be considered.
  • Continue in course of study at Swinburne in 2012.

Major grants/scholarships

  • Rental Assistance Scholarships to the value of $2,000
  • Laptop Macbook Pro 15" or Acer TravelMate 5760

  • Prepaid mobile broadband with Vodafone

Local undergraduate students are able to apply for up to two of the major grants/scholarships. Application for 2012 have closed. In 2013 applications will open on 25 February 2013.

Please Note: There are additional criteria for rental assistance scholarships, laptop grants, mobile broadband grants and specialist software grants.

Book voucher grants

Swinburne Bookshop book voucher grants up to the value of $600.

Available to local undergraduate degree students from Housing and Finance Officers located at the Hawthorn, Prahran and Lilydale campuses.

Available at the start of Semester 1 and Semester 2.


Public transport grants

Concession Met Tickets and V/Line tickets are available to local undergraduate degree students from Housing and Finance officers located at the Hawthorn, Prahran and Lilydale campuses.

Students must have a Victorian Public Transport Student Concession Card to use the concession tickets.

Available throughout the year.


Library photocopying/printing cards grants

Library photocopying /printing cards to the value of $20 or $50.

Available to local undergraduate degree students from Housing and Finance Officers located at the Hawthorn, Prahran and Lilydale campuses.

Available throughout the year.


Food voucher grants

Food vouchers to the value of $20 or $50.

Available to local undergraduate degree students from Housing and Finance Officers located at the Hawthorn, Prahran and Lilydale campuses.

Available throughout the year.


Petrol voucher grants

Petrol vouchers to the value of $20 or $50.

Available to local undergraduate degree students from Housing and Finance Officers located at the Hawthorn, Prahran and Lilydale campuses.

Available throughout the year.


Rental assistance scholarships

Rental assistance scholarships are up to the value of $2,000 and paid in fortnightly instalments of $100 backdated to the start of Semester 1, 27 February 2012.

Fifty scholarships are currently available and the aim of the scholarships is to assist students with rent/board during the academic year.

Local undergraduate degree students paying rent or board, including students living in the family home paying board and contributing to household expenses, are eligible to apply. Students paying mortgage payments are ineligible.

Laptop grants

Laptops are provided to local undergraduate degree students to keep for study and personal use.

Types of laptops:

  • MacBook Pro 15" 2.2 GHz i7/4GB/750GB Laptop with shoulder bag (18 available)
    Only open to local undergraduate degree students where use of Mac computer is critical to participation in their course of study. This includes courses related to design, film and television; digital media including multimedia and games; and engineering and technology.
  • Acer TravelMate 5760 Core i3 Laptop with case (40 available)
    Open to local undergraduate degree students in any course of study.

Students can only select one type of laptop on offer.

Previous recipients are ineligible to apply.

Mobile broadband grants

Vodafone USB mobile modem with 3GB to 4GB data.

Students will be provided in 2012 with K3771 USB modem and 3GB data for the first 30 days and subsequently 4GB per 30 days for the remainder of 2012. The modem will need to be returned at the end of 2012 to Student Equity and Disability Services.

With this modem, broadband speeds are available in Vodafone's 3G Mobile Broadband Standard Coverage area and in Vodafone's 850 Mobile Broadband coverage area. You will not have coverage within Australia outside of these areas with this device (i.e. you will not have coverage in Vodafone's Mobile Broadband Regional Coverage area).

Local undergraduate degree students who have broadband access are ineligible to apply.

Specialist software grants

Specialist software programs which are critical to local undergraduate degree students' participation in their course of study.

Previous recipients are ineligible to apply.

Experience Swinburne grants 2012

Experience Swinburne grants assist secondary students from rural and regional areas of Victoria and bordering states to cover the cost of return travel to Melbourne to attend Swinburne’s Open Day. Return cost of travel between the student’s home and Melbourne is subsidised under the grant. Application form will be available on 2012 Open Day web page.
