Product design engineers have a unique skill set that enables them to design innovative, sustainable products. The Bachelor of Engineering (Product Design) (Honours) combines studies in industrial design and engineering, linking the creativity and human-centred approach of industrial design with the academic rigour of engineering science, material and manufacturing process selection, project management and innovation. Students develop skills needed to design and develop competitive products for Australian and international markets.

Practical workshops and industry projects are key features of the course. Students may choose a minor specialisation in manufacturing engineering, biomedical engineering or electronic engineering. Students apply their learning in a professionally focused, multidisciplinary project during their final year of study. They also undertake at least 12 weeks of relevant work experience and can choose to complete postgraduate-level elective units.

Successful completion of the Bachelor of Engineering (Product Design) (Honours) requires students to complete units of study to the value of 400 credit points. All units of study are valued at 12.5 credit points unless otherwise stated.

Work Integrated Learning

Swinburne's Work Integrated Learning program provides additional opportunities for you to gain valuable skills and real industry experience in the form of placements, internships or study tours - all while earning credit towards your degree.

Choose a Work Integrated Learning option:

You'll get paid to work in an area related to your field of study for 12 months, where you'll combine hands-on learning with academic submissions, workplace reflection and feedback from your host organisation. Most students undertake their placements in the third year of their degree, so you’ll want to map out your electives as soon as you can and register for a placement at least 6 months before your preferred start date.

The Professional Placement co-major has four 25 credit point units.

You might choose to complete your internship part-time over a semester or in a more intensive block during Summer or Winter terms.

Full-time study: 100 credit points/eight standard units of study per year

Honours

Honours merit calculation

Honours merit calculation will be based on the averaged results of 12 units in the final two years of the course with the following descriptive outcomes:

BEng (Product Design) (Hons) with High Distinction; for students who achieve ≥ 80
BEng (Product Design) (Hons) with Distinction; for students who achieve 70 – 79
BEng (Product Design) (Hons) with Credit; for students who achieve 60 – 69
BEng (Product Design) (Hons); for students who achieve < 60

Students who transfer with advanced standing are required to undertake at least nine of these units at Swinburne, including all six Advanced Engineering units, to qualify for an honours merit calculation. This honours merit calculation will be based only on units completed at Swinburne. If a student has not completed at least nine of the specified units, they will graduate with a BEng (Product Design) (Hons) as an award title, but not be eligible for a merit based honours description.

Course learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

Apply coherent and advanced knowledge of product design engineering in diverse contexts and applications using critical thinking and judgement.
Apply knowledge of research principles and methods to plan and execute a piece of research with some independence, as preparation for research higher degrees.
Apply problem solving, design and decision-making methodologies to identify and provide innovative solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence.
Apply abstraction, mathematics and product design engineering fundamentals to the analysis, design and operation of a model, using appropriate engineering methods and tools.
Communicate proficiently in professional practice to a variety of audiences, function as an effective member or leader of a diverse team, and use the basic tools and practices of project management within project work.
Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, professional accountability and an awareness of professional engineering practice in a global and sustainable context.
Reflect on and take responsibility for their own learning and self-management processes, and manage their own time and processes effectively by regularly reviewing of personal performance as a means of managing continuing professional development and lifelong learning.

Career opportunities

Graduates may find employment in industries dealing in the design, development and manufacture of domestic products or the automobile industry. Their role will be primarily in the area of design, innovation, project management and manufacturing.

Professional recognition

Graduates are eligible to apply for graduate membership of the Institution of Engineers Australia and the Design Institute of Australia.

Entry requirements

Required 2016 ATAR: 75+

Successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, such as an interstate or international Year 12 qualification.

VCE prerequisites: Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 25 in English (or equivalent) or 30 in English (EAL); and Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 20 in Mathematical Methods.

Non-Year 12 entry
Completion or partial completion of an approved tertiary qualification (including Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, Associate Degrees and Degrees). Additional performance criteria and prerequisite requirements may also apply.

Students admitted to the course with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be eligible for academic credit.

The university may determine selection criteria and restrictions, in respect of courses, to apply in addition to these entry requirements.

Pathways

Pathways allow students to progress from one qualification to another where the first course is recognised as an entry requirement and/or provides advanced standing to the second.
