Swinburne ranks in the top 100 universities worldwide for physics research*, one of only two Australian universities to do so. The most recent Excellence in Research Australia report ranked us well above world standard for our research in astronomical and space sciences. *Academic Ranking of World Universities, 2015
Our Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing is the largest astronomical research group in Victoria with research covering observational, theoretical and computational astronomy. We operate a significant supercomputing facility and a virtual reality theatre and have direct access to the world’s largest optical and infrared telescopes – the 10 metre Keck telescopes in Hawaii.
Our Centre for Micro-Photonics is a leading international centre in biophotonics and nanophotonics research. The Centre for Quantum and Optical Science comprises four research groups: quantum gases, ultrafast science, applied optics and theoretical physics. Together these centres make up the Swinburne Optics and Laser Laboratories (SOLL).
