Hi my name is Daniel Burnett and I interviewed a 36 year old mother of two. Her name is Lee Burnett and she grew up in a small coastal town called Ledge Point, Western Australia.
Lee how many people lived in Ledge Point when you were young"
About 300 people lived in Ledge Point during the cray fishing season which runs from November till June, during the off season only 100-150 stayed in the town. Today, there are over 600 people living in the town during the cray fishing season.
What type of houses and buildings were there in Ledge Point when you were young?
There weren’t many houses and most of them were what we called "beach shack".
They were made of cement sheeting and tin. They were small and basic. There was a small corner shop and a country club/pub. Today there are over 1000 houses that are modern, with landscaped gardens and ocean views. The corner shop has doubled in size and there is a resort style caravan park to accommodate tourists. Ledge Point even has a cricket club, golf course and a children’s playground.
Do you think Ledge Point is better now or when you were young?
I think it is better now because there are more things for the community to enjoy, but I think it is a shame to see the beach shacks being replaced with big houses.
