When I was young all the rivers were free flowing and full and sometimes quick to flood, but now a lot of the big rivers have completely dried up or are not much more than puddles.
I grew up in Queensland and one of the big rivers that does not flow is the Condonmine River. Last time I saw it, three years ago, it was completely dry.
In Victoria a river called the Wirlcol used to be free and fast flowing and full to high banks. Now it’s low enough for a 4 year old to walk across it. This river runs between the Edwards and the Murray Rivers. At times the Wirlcol River used to be up to the tree tops when in flood, but I haven’t seen it that high for over 20 years.
When I was a little girl you used to be able to drink river water as long as it was flowing. It was safe then but not these days.
