The impacts of human activity and population growth on the life-support systems of the planet have created worldwide momentum for action. Our students will graduate into a world very different from anything we have had to experience and they will need to be equipped to cope with conditions of uncertainty, complexity and rapid change.

Sustainability is a minimum condition for a flourishing planet in the long term and is concerned with the ongoing health of our economy, our societies and the environment. David Orr argues that the real challenge we face in embracing a more sustainable future rests with our ability to educate students differently.

Tertiary institutes are the cultivators and generators of knowledge, charged with educating the leaders and decision-makers of tomorrow. As such, they play a crucial role in the creation of sustainable societies. Education for Sustainability is now acknowledged internationally and nationally as the pedagogical platform by which we can guide learners to explore and evaluate contested and emerging issues, gather evidence and create solutions for a sustainable future.
