Information Gathering
Library collection
The Library supports Swinburne Research and actively seeks new material that matches Swinburne’s areas of research concentration. Library staff work with academic and research staff to maintain the currency and relevance of the collection. If you have any suggestions for additional material, please contact your Liaison Librarian.
Databases and other online resources
The Library subscribes to many full text and citation databases across a wide range of disciplines. These databases are valuable resources for researchers, providing online access to a vast selection of research materials. Content includes full text journal and newspaper articles, statistics, legislation, standards, theses and more.
Material from other libraries
Inter-library loan and document delivery services provide the Swinburne University research community with access to research literature that is not available at Swinburne.
If you would like to borrow in person from other libraries we have reciprocal borrowing arrangements established.
Keep up to date
Keep your literature review up to date automatically by setting up electronic alerting services.
Contacts
Liaison Librarians provide individual consultation services to advise you on new research resources, ensure that the collection supports your research, and provide training and support for managing bibliographic data with EndNote.
Organising your Bibliography
Bibliographic software
Writing up your research project can be made easier by creating your own database of references as you find them.
Swinburne Library provides access to EndNote Desktop and EndNote Web. The EndNote software and manuals are available for loan from all campus libraries.
Seminars and training
The Library runs free training workshops and seminars on information searching techniques, subject specific resources and EndNote.
Contact
Liaison Librarians provide training sessions in using EndNote, and follow-up assistance.
Getting Published
Increase access
Publications made available though open access can be more frequently cited and have greater impact than research published only through traditional scholarly media.
For online publishing and services: The Library’s Online Services staff can assist you with options for publishing your research and reaching a larger audience through online promotion.
Bibliometric measures
In some areas of research, metrics such as citation analysis (how many times an article/author/journal has been cited) can be used as a quality indicator. Metrics can be useful for.
- Identifying the journals that are most appropriate for your publication
- Understanding who is citing your research
- Demonstrating your own research quality
The Library provides advice on how to use resources to obtain bibliometric measures such as citation analysis and journal impact factors.
Library subscriptions cover the most commonly used citation databases for finding bibliometric measures, such as Scopus and Web of Knowledge.
Not all disciplines are equally covered by traditional bibliometric measures. If you’d like to discuss quality measures in your discipline area please contact us.
Scholarly publishing support

Swinburne Research Bank
Swinburne Research Bank is an online open access collection of research authored by Swinburne researchers. Content includes journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, reports, working papers and more. Swinburne Research Bank is designed to create a complete picture of research published at Swinburne.
Swinburne Research Bank records are indexed by Google, Google Scholar, and other search engines. They are harvested by international indexing services and the National Library of Australia, helping your research to reach a wider audience and maximise its potential for citation. Contact the Swinburne Research Bank if you would like to have your publications included.
Research quality assessment
The Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative will assess the quality and impact of research publication output, and will use metrics and other impact measures to evaluate research quality. The Library is available to provide valuable advice and support in meeting the requirements of research quality assessment exercises..
