Services for researchers

Library services and resources are continually reviewed to ensure that they meet your needs as a researcher. If you have further suggestions on how we can help meet your research needs, please contact Rebecca Parker, Research Services Librarian.

Your library can work for you—we are here to help you succeed in your research at Swinburne.

Promoting Swinburne research

Showcase Swinburne research

Swinburne Research Bank is an online open access collection of research authored by Swinburne researchers. Content includes journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, reports, working papers and more. Swinburne Research Bank is designed to create a complete picture of research published at Swinburne.

Increase access

Publications made available though open access can be more frequently cited and have greater impact than research published only through traditional scholarly media. Swinburne Research Bank records are indexed by Google and Google Scholar, and harvested by the National Library of Australia and other indexing services. This helps your research reach a wider audience and maximises its potential for citation. Contact Swinburne Research Bank staff if you would like to have your publications included.

Scholarly publishing support

Swinburne Online Journals provides a publication platform for online open access journals including:

  • Technical infrastructure support
  • Help and advice on online publishing and copyright.

Swinburne Library staff also provide advice on creating and hosting websites for conferences and providing access to conference papers.

Copyright and permissions

Swinburne Library provides advice and training on copyright issues for publishing and support in negotiating terms and conditions.

Access to research

Library collection

The Library supports Swinburne research excellence and actively seeks new material that matches Swinburne's areas of research concentration. Library staff work with academic and research staff to maintain the currency and relevance of the collection. If you have any suggestions for additional material, please contact your Liaison Librarian.

Databases and other online resources

The Library subscribes to many full text and citation databases across a wide range of disciplines. These databases are valuable resources for researchers, providing online access to a vast selection of research materials. Content includes full text journal and newspaper articles, statistics, legislation, standards, theses and more.

Materials from other libraries

Inter-library loan and document delivery services provide the Swinburne research community with access to research literature that is not available at Swinburne. If you would like to borrow in person from other libraries, we have reciprocal borrowing arrangements established.

Stay up to date

Keep your literature review up to date automatically by setting up alerting services.

Research quality measures

Bibliometric measures

The Library provides advice on how to obtain bibliometric measures such as citation analysis and journal impact factors.

Citation databases

The Library provides access to key databases for bibliometric measures, such as Scopus and Web of Knowledge.

Discipline specific metrics

Not all disciplines are equally covered by traditional bibliometric measures. If you'd like to discuss quality measures in your discipline areas, please contact Rebecca Parker.

Research quality assessment

The Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative in 2012 will assess the quality and impact of research publication output, and will use metrics and other impact measures to evaluate research quality. The Library is available to provide valuable advice and support in meeting the requirements of research quality assessment exercises. Please see the Swinburne Research website for more information.

Research data services

Swinburne Library and Swinburne Research are working on a joint project funded by the Australian National Data Service (ANDS). This project aims to develop the infrastructure at Swinburne to help support you in managing your research-related data. Find more information about services related to this project at the research data services website.

Helpful tools

Bibliographic software

Writing up your research can be made easier by creating your own database of references as you find them. Swinburne Library provides access to EndNote bibliographic software. The EndNote software is available for loan from all campus libraries. Liaison Librarians provide training sessions in using EndNote and follow-up assistance.
