Finding images on the Web

The quickest way to find an image on the Web is to type a name or keyword into Google Image Search, however, these images may be protected by copyright. If you would like to use any of these images, we advise contacting the site owner to obtain permission.

There are many other resources available for finding images, photographs and graphics for use in teaching and learning materials. Following are a list of just a few:

Free (public domain) image collections

A comprehensive list of  Public Domain images for a wide range of subject areas can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_images. Although theses images do not require the copyright owner's approval, be sure to check the site's terms and conditions to ensure that your use and purpose are covered and don't forget to include any appropriate acknowledgements or copyright statements as required by the source.

You could also try searching the Web using the following keywords: free, copyright-free, royalty-free [together with the terms] images, graphics, photosclipart.

Swinburne image collections

Swinburne has a number of online image collections available. Some of these images may be available for educational use. Check the terms and conditions of use on each site and if in doubt contact the web site manager.

  • Swinburne Image Bank
    Historical photographs relating to Swinburne in its various manifestations from its early years into the 1980s. This archive, and other Australian image collections, can be searched through PictureAustralia.

  • Swinburne News
    A twice-yearly publication that showcases Swinburne's research, achievements and activities, as well as providing alumni news and profiles. Includes lots of pictures.

  • Swinburne Web logos
    The logos available on this page are for use in publications, or with other design work, and on web pages. Logos should not be manipulated or changed prior to use. They may be re-sized, as needed, but re-sizing should be done proportionally so that the artwork is not distorted.

  • Swinburne Press Design Studio
    Provides a broad range of design and desktop publishing services.

Databases Swinburne Library subscribes to

The Library subscribes to two databases which include images. If you are using these databases off-campus, you will be prompted for a username and password before accessing. Be sure to read the agreement sections for usage; essentially all educational use is allowed.

  • Ebsco Image Collections (accessed via Academic Search Premier)
    This collection contains a variety of images of people, places or objects and includes photographs, maps and flags. Use of images is for research or personal educational purposes only. If you want to use the image in any other context you must contact the supplier.

  • Elibrary Australia
    An on-line reference library that includes thousands of maps and pictures. Use of these maps and pictures is for research or personal educational purposes only. If you want to use the image in any other context you must contact the supplier.
