Copyright and use of
images
Digital images are protected by copyright
law. When you use images in teaching, learning or research,
always make sure that you have the right to do so.
These are the main ways you can use images without infringing
the Copyright Act. This images website provides some information
about images in these categories.
- Images you have created yourself, or other Swinburne
images
- Free or public domain images
- Images which can be used through the education licence
in Part VB of the Copyright Act 1968.
- Images in databases to which Swinburne subscribes
- Images available on the Web accompanied by a statement
which provides you with a licence to use them.
- Images for which you have the explicit permission of the
copyright owner.
Always abide by any conditions placed on use by the
copyright owner.
Educational use: Part VB of the Copyright
Act 1968 provides a limited right to use copyright material
for educational purposes, provided that access is limited
to Swinburne staff and students. There are some other important
requirements too, and these are set out on the copyright web
site at http://www.swin.edu.au/copyright
They relate in particular to providing an electronic document
notice indicating the basis of use – see http://www.swin.edu.au/copyright/notices.htm
Internet: Images accessible via the Internet
are mostly subject to copyright. In some cases re-use is permitted,
often with some usage restrictions (such as non-commercial
use, or a requirement for some form of acknowledgement). Always
check the copyright statement associated with an internet
image.
Digital image collections: Downloading of
images from an image database or online collection is subject
to copyright law and to the terms and conditions of that service.
Please refer to the Terms and Conditions or Copyright
statement for each collection.
