How to place a hold

You can place a hold on most items in the library.

yes You can place a hold for...

  • an item currently on loan
  • an item located at another campus library

no You can't place a hold on...

  • periodicals, items on reserve, and some other restricted items - the catalogue will tell you

To place a hold

  • Go to the catalogue.
  • Select your campus. Your hold will be available for pickup at the campus you select.
  • Do a search.
  • Go to the detailed view screen for the item.
  • Click the Place Hold button.Place Hold button

To place a hold you need to login to the catalogue.
If you haven't already logged in you will see the login screen.

Enter your library barcode and PIN then click the Login button.

Your library barcode is on your Swinburne student card, Swinburne staff card, or Swinburne Library borrower card. It starts with a U. Enter the whole barcode including any letters.

For students, your PIN is the last 4 numbers of the telephone number you provided when you first enrolled.

Next, you will see the hold confirmation screen. This screen shows how you will be notified (by email), your pickup location, and the expiry date for your hold.

To confirm your hold you must click Place Hold.

The next screen shows that your hold has been successfully placed.

You can choose to...

  • Return to searching
    You will still be logged in so if you place any more holds you won't need to login again.
    Remember to click "Logout" when you have finished using the catalogue.
  • Logout and return
    You will be logged out from the catalogue and return to searching.
    If you place any more holds you will need to login again.

no If a hold is not allowed on the item...

If holds are not permitted on an item you will see a message: "Sorry no holds permitted on this item".

If the item is available at your campus you will see a message: "This title should be available. Please check the shelves."
