High Power Industrial Laser Research at Swinburne

Assoc Prof Milan Brandt

Industrial Research Institute Swinburne (IRIS), Swinburne University of Technology

3.30pm, Friday 29 June 2001, Seminar Room (AR103), Graduate Research School

A high power industrial laser research laboratory has been established at IRIS to conduct research and teaching in the area of high power laser processing and precision manufacturing. It was established after the arrival of Milan Brandt at IRIS at the beginning of 1999 and is unique in the Australian academic environment and one of only two such facilities in Australia. The laboratory is funded by the Chancellery Strategic Initiatives Program, as well as grants from the CRC IMST, CRC CAST, ARC and industry. It complements the excimer and femtosecond laser facilities at IRIS and Optronics and Laser Laboratories at Swinburne University respectively.

A number of projects have been initiated in the areas of laser welding, cladding, cutting and sensor development and the presentation will give an overview of the facility and present some of the results obtained to date.
