How do you enable the box in the corner that helps you when you get lost?

It's your version. You are using Maya 5.0, and the current version is 2009. They have changed the numbering system, but 2009 equates to about version 10 or a similar number.

Download the Personal Learning Edition of maya 2009 from the autodesk website.

Is it free? Because the only reason I'm using this version is because i got this one free.

Yes, it's free.
There are several versions of Maya.

Maya PLE
A free learning edition, that has full features and no expiration date. Your files are rendered with a water mark though. But this is great if you are just starting out.

Maya Complete
The full un-water marked version of PLE.

Maya Unlimited
More features than Complete, such as cloth, fluids and other dynamic effects.

Hi Steve

I am having trouble with the streaming of this video. I seem to be able to watch about 1 min, then it freezes. Could it be because I live in the UK?

Best regards

Hi Steve

Thank you for the fantastic videos

I have managed to download some of your videos from itunes, it would be fantastic if you could put the rest of the series up on there too.

BTW your iTunes icon/hyperlink thingy on this page is a dead link.

Best Regards
