  • Students successful in gaining employment with Myer

Swinburne and Myer Eastland have partnered to give young people the opportunity to gain job-ready retail skills through a successful new program.

The program offers students from Swinburne University of Technology undertaking a Certificate II in Retail Services a valuable 10-week work placement with retail giant, Myer.

Since the program started only months ago, nine retail students from Swinburne’s Croydon campus have already completed their placement at Myer Eastland with all nine successfully gaining employment at Myer.

“The students impressed Myer management with their high standards, initiative and efficiency and consequently all nine have been offered casual and Christmas casual employment,” says Retail Services teacher Lorelle Heywood.

“The students worked in different departments building their knowledge and skills in retail, including the fast growing area of ‘click and collect’. They processed as many as 1200 + orders in a day, which is quite a feat for work placement students!”

Retail student, Kayla Alexander says the experience of working at Myer was amazing and one that has given her the boost of confidence she needed in the workplace.

“I've become so much more confident within myself and my ability to converse with customers. I count myself so lucky to be one who was offered the change to take up this experience, thank Myer for making this all possible,” says Ms Alexander.

Ms Heywood says Myer Eastland is very keen to continue the work placement program each semester with more retail students to begin in the coming weeks.

Students receive practical industry experience that allows them to develop and apply what they’re learning in class and in the classroom simulated shop

Students were presented with certificates of completion as well as the exciting news of their offers of employment.
