More than 100 Department of Education and Training (DET) participants have completed a management training program at Swinburne, developing essential management and leadership skills and identifying future department leaders.

The program, run through Swinburne’s Industry Solutions, offers participants the opportunity to obtain a Diploma of Leadership and Management and a unit of a Graduate Certificate in Applied Business.

Swinburne’s Vice-President (Engagement) Andrew C Smith says the Inspiring Managers at DET Program provides a foundation for building the behaviours and mindset to lead and manage successfully in a complex and dynamic environment.

“Participants are challenged to develop their knowledge and skills, identify their capabilities and be coached to further improve their ability to lead and inspire others,” says Mr Smith.

“The six-month program incorporates face-to-face delivery, individual coaching, self-paced and on-the-job learning, allowing participants the opportunity to put their learning into practice.”

The second cohort of Inspiring Managers includes 44 participants who received a Diploma of Management and 28 who received both the Diploma of Leadership and Management and a unit of the Graduate Certificate in Applied Business.

DET Team Leader, Governance and Accountability, Strategy and Integration Division, Early Childhood and School Education Group, Gareth Sambrook, said the program helped him finesse his personal leadership profile, his approach to his role and how it was placed within the broader context of the Department.

“The program equipped me to use both classic and contemporary theories, strategies and models around coaching, dealing with difficult behaviour and fostering a “growth mindset” within both my team and my colleagues,” Gareth says.

“What I now appreciate most, with the hindsight of completing the program, is that it gave me ‘permission’ to be a leader, and to dedicate sufficient time and energy to being a better leader.”
