Swinburne ranks as a top 100 university under 50 years old

Swinburne has again ranked in the The Times Higher Education 150 Under 50 Rankings, which recognises the world’s top universities under the age of 50.
Swinburne Vice-Chancellor, Professor Linda Kristjanson, says the rankings highlight Swinburne’s reputation for high-impact research.
“It is an honour to receive international recognition for our accomplishments,” says Professor Kristjanson.
“Swinburne has a terrific track record of generating knowledge and ideas that translate into real outcomes. We do this by providing a dynamic environment devoted to excellence in both education and research.”
The Times Higher Education 150 Under 50 Rankings are designed to showcase rapidly rising and innovative institutions. Rankings are based on five key characteristics including research, citations, teaching, industry income and international outlook.
This year, Swinburne ranked at number 74 and was one of 19 Australian universities featured in the world’s top 150 universities under 50 years of age.
Swinburne’s high-impact research is a significant reason for this year’s presence. Some recent initiatives include:
- development of a new graphene lens that could help computers beam data at the speed of light
- involvement in the discovery of a Fast Radio Burst that has enabled astronomers to ‘weigh’ the universe
- discovery of an ancient gas cloud that may contain remnants of the first stars that formed the universe
- collaborating with the University of Wollongong to design an improved condom.
The Times Higher Education 150 Under 50 Rankings announcement follows the 2016 QS World University Rankings by Subject, which recognised Swinburne in the top 50 universities in the world for the subject of Art & Design.
Swinburne was founded as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College in 1908 and gained university status in 1992.
