Swinburne serves secondary students a taste for skills

Swinburne University of Technology is offering secondary school students a taste of what it’s like to study a vocational course at the Croydon and Wantirna campuses.
Skills taster programs will allow students to complete introductory study in areas of vocational learning that might interest them. The programs are new to Swinburne and have been introduced as a way for students to make more informed decisions about future study and careers.
The programs are delivered over eight weeks and include carpentry, plumbing, understanding electrotechnology, childcare and working for the community, healthcare and nursing, horticulture and landscaping, welding, fabrication and machining.
Clive Linley, Coordinator of Community Projects at Swinburne’s Croydon campus, said students will experience hands-on training, with the opportunity to use equipment and technology used in industry, and gain insights and abilities that are expected in modern workplaces.
“The programs are very practical and relevant to industry. Students who choose nursing will experience our simulated nursing labs, the plumbing students will put guttering together and fold sheet metal, the horticulture students will build a stonewall…they’ll get their hands dirty almost straight away.”
“It’s great for students who are also thinking about undertaking VETiS and VCAL programs, as it not only provides them with insight into the types of skills developed in these vocational courses, it is a fraction of the cost.”
