Swinburne’s new security and welfare app makes Swinburne a safer campus for students

Swinburne University of Technology has a new app offering, that gives students and staff quick and easy access to all of Swinburne’s security and welfare support services.
The app – called Safe@Swin - has been developed by the Behavioural Risk Assessment and Management (BRAM) team as part of the Safer Community at Swinburne initiative, which aims to encourage the university community to play a part in campus welfare by looking out for one another.
BRAM coordinator Annabel Chan and security manger Christopher Evans started the push for development of the app in June of last year.
The app features information on the Safer Community program, a security escort booking service, campus maps and navigation, emergency contacts, as well as links to all Swinburne student support services.
According to Dr Chan the Safe@Swin app differs from other similar apps in that it is a whole-university collaboration and not solely focussed on one particular service.
“Essentially what we’ve tried to create is a one stop shop, linking the university community together with all safety and support services, so students always know where and how to get help,” she said.
Mr Evans said the app is a great way for students to contact the security team. The app has the ability to make direct calls to security and or police, has a personal alarm and torch and also allows for emails and photos to be sent directly to the security control room.
Safe@Swin is available for free download from the iPhone App Store and Google Play store.
