MOOC to ‘seize the day’ and transform learning

Teachers, academics, learning designers and educators are invited to take part in a free opportunity to learn new methods for effective learning design through the new Carpe Diem MOOC being launched by Swinburne University of Technology commencing 10 March.
The Carpe Diem process is internationally renowned and based on research by digital learning pioneer and Swinburne University's Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning Transformations, Professor Gilly Salmon.
“This process is a rapid and highly collaborative learning design method that enables participants to design, develop and deliver innovative courses, and provides a course development framework for all those interested in digital and blended learning.
"We know that almost every higher educational institution throughout the world is trying to accommodate new ways of learning, using digital and web technologies, and at the same time meeting students’ shifting aspirations, needs and expectations. Carpe Diem signposts an effective and successful way of addressing these challenges.” Professor Gilly Salmon said.

Professor Salmon, along with colleagues Professor Janet Gregory and Dr Kulari Lokuge Dona, created the Carpe Diem MOOC to assist educators in any discipline or level of education to enhance the design of teaching, learning and assessment experiences.
“Deploying engaging technologies is an integral part of every learner’s educational experience. The Carpe Diem approach enables collaborative planning for any course – new or in refresh. We have developed the MOOC as a stepping stone to creating learning design that will delight students of the future,” Professor Salmon said.
Participants will spend 3-4 hours per week working entirely online in collaborative groups, giving them a chance to experience the online learning environment for themselves and work together to design scaffolded learning plans.
The MOOC also provides information on methods for fast and effective learning design, how to apply the model to design course activities and participants will be able to receive help from others and reflect on how to apply their MOOC experience to their own practice.
Participants will receive 'badges' for completed activities, collecting them all will lead to a Certificate of Completion for finishing the MOOC.
